Client: EFL

Problem
The EFL is the National Governing Body for 72 professional football clubs in England and Wales. Each club is an independent organisation and each had a different approach to safeguarding training, quite often contracting external suppliers when there was a staff training need. Part of the problem was this resulted in an inconsistent approach to safeguarding training. The EFL is dedicated to providing consistent, high-quality training to all its Clubs.
Solution
We were contracted to design, develop and deliver the safeguarding training provision to clubs. This included a national scoping exercise to assess the individual needs of Clubs and Designated Safeguarding Officers. National leaders in their fields have been contracted to deliver interesting and engaging content covering their subject expertise. The QA system has been created and implemented, providing outcomes for the client. Covid-19 has enabled Jennie Smith in her consultancy role to look at provision from a different angle, and as of Summer 2020, the training is being taken online either by video link or webinars.

Client: British Horseracing Authority

Problem
Our Investigations Team was commissioned by Matt Mancini, Head of Safeguarding and Human Welfare, to provide investigation services relating safeguarding and human welfare.
Solution
As a result, our valued Consultant Chris Walker (former Detective Chief Inspector and Strategic Lead for Crime Investigations in Greater Manchester Police) was selected to lead on the investigations, and to provide support and advice to the Safeguarding Team.
Part of Chris’s role was to interview a number of vulnerable witnesses. Chris, as a trauma informed practitioner with 30 years policing experience, was able to sensitively support the witnesses. Chris also had the role of interviewer when dealing with the subject to concern, working with Matt at the BHA.
Chris also produced an Investigations Report, including recommendations.
The valued and trusted relationship continues with the BHA, most recently, our Director, Jennie Smith, was asked to deliver a bespoke Training Workshop to the Executive Board, and trained Matt Mancini on our In House ‘Train the Supervisors’ course, our accredited course, which will enable Matt to provide reflective supervision to his staff moving forward.

Client: Royal Ballet and Opera

In 2023, we were commissioned by the Royal Ballet and Opera to provide Board Level Safeguarding Training. The brief was that the Board Members were all from Commercial backgrounds, and although RBO is a registered Charity, the nature of the services, and the global reputation meant that this was run very much as a business.
Jennie, our Director, worked closely with Head of Safeguarding, Legal and HR in order to refine the content of the slides to suit these particular board members. We created a bespoke handout for the delegates, to support their learning journey, and in order to have a reference moving forward, following the training, which took place on site in Covent Garden.
The workshop was 90 minutes long, and was interactive, in order to create more impact, and a longer lasting embedding of learning. Following the training, the Chief people Officer stated: “It was perfect. We couldn’t have asked for a better pitched training session.”

Client: Standard Life

Our Founder Jennie worked with the Vulnerable Customer Team at Standard Life, part of the Phoenix Group, to create a bespoke ‘Mental Capacity’ training session for their Team.
Following a number of pre-training consultation sessions, Jennie created a bespoke training workshop, with supporting templates and Help Sheets to incorporate into every day practice for the front line staff moving forward.
Jennie and Jo, our Consultant with over 20 years of experience being a Child Protection/Family Law Solicitor, headed up to the brilliant Standard Life HQ in Edinburgh to deliver the day-long course with the Vulnerable Customer Team Leaders.
During the training, we were able to outline the Legislative Framework relating to the assessment of mental capacity, in an easy to understand and accessible way. The toolkits we provided for Standard Life have been distributed, staff trained internally, and rolled out through the business. This means that front line Call Handler staff and their line managers are now equipped to deal with cases when customers may lack capacity to make decisions about their finances, thereby enabling Standard Life to safeguard their clients and comply with the Financial Conduct Authority’s Consumer Duty Rules.

Client: National Theatre

Problem
During Covid-19 lockdown, The National Theatre created an online resource for children to be able to communicate with other children online and share their creative work in a safe space. Each day a character called Madame Kalamazoo sends an email to the parent/carer with progressive personalised steps of a story for the child. The client is well aware of its obligations under current safeguarding guidance and looked to Safeguarding Today to assist in this aspect.
Solution
Jennie Smith worked with the production team to create a safe environment for children and their parents to enjoy the creative content. Working with the client, Jennie advised on the most efficient ways in which the online space could be made safe before the project launch https://www.madamekalamazoo.com/.
